Welcome to this week’s edition of The Source on location in Agra, India, on making conscious choices!

You may be familiar with these vulnerable and enlightening words of St. Augustine:

[tweet_dis]“All my life I’ve been knocking at the door. Suddenly, it opens… I’ve been knocking from the inside.”[/tweet_dis]

Often in life, this is why we feel confused and overwhelmed regarding what we really want. We don’t acknowledge that so much of what we want is already inside. So in order to get clearer on those aspects of our life we want to heighten, we can use the lens of the Five Realms as a filter to “see” what it is we really want and awaken what already rests within. So first let’s reflect on the five aspects of our life that impact our choice-making: the physical realm, the emotional realm, the material realm, the relationship realm, and the spiritual realm. And ask yourself what you really want right now in each of those realms.

For the process to work, we need to come from a place of stillness and silence – which allows us to be less conditioned in our assessments, and less knee-jerk in our reactions. If we can come from this space – with greater regularity & consistency – we will make decisions LESS out of fear and desperation.

We all have experienced making a choice out of fear, poverty consciousness, desperation, or constricted less-than thinking. Rarely is the outcome what we envisioned. In fact, most likely, you will feel even more confused or overwhelmed because after the dust settles, you will not have what you really, really want.

In moments like that, we need to breathe deeply and remember the words of Lao Tzu: “Do you have the patience to wait
until your mud settles and the water is clear?
Can you remain unmoving
until the right action arises by itself?”

If that feels right to you, then here are seven steps to help you gain clarity and make more conscious choices:

1. Meditate. Spend at least ten minutes slowing down, breathing, and relaxing your bodymind.
2. Let go of anyone else’s opinion of your choice, vision, or decision.
3. Close your eyes & place your hand on your heart as you walk yourself through each realm and envision choosing one.
4. Project yourself into the future & ask, “How does it feel now that I have made this choice?”
5. Listen to your heart. Listen to your body. Listen to the whispers of your soul.
6. Trust in the divine plan of the universe.
7. Feel yourself merge into the choice.

This conscious choice-making process can be activated in any moment – and is ALWAYS worth taking the time to first slow down and pattern interrupt from your relentless swirl of thoughts, mental activities, chatter, and confusion.

I’ll see you in the GAP. Peace. -d

Mantra: Tat tvam asi

The Greeks called it the Golden Rule, and it’s been expressed by many, many different cultures in slightly different ways across time, but the essence of the rule is that if I’m kind to others, I will, in turn, receive kindness. To move beyond the barriers that separate us, shift to seeing the one-ness of this sweet human collective that we are all a part of. We are all the same beings expressing ourselves in 8 billion different ways. Tat tvam asi is Sanskrit for “you are that.”

To shift your perspective in less than a minute, focus on someone that you have been comparing yourself to – a friend, co-worker, colleague, relative – anyone that you have recently compared yourself to. Envision their face or the experience that involved them and as you observe it in your mind’s eye, silently repeat tat tvam asi like a mantra over and over.

This weekend’s meditation is Day 22 on my album “40 Days of Transformation.” It focuses on putting into practice the Golden Rule in our every day lives, and how to become more mindful of how we act, and react, throughout our day. The mantra is tat tvam asi. If you prefer saying the affirmation in English, you can use the affirmation: “I am that.”

This week, when you notice yourself judging others throughout the day – invoke your affirmation.

“90 percent of our physical toxicity is emotionally derived.” —David Simon, MD

Welcome, Spiritual Warriors, to this week’s edition of The Source on what stress does to your mind.

A couple weeks ago we examined the body’s ancient fight-flight response. I talk about it regularly because stress is such an important topic in our society, and I want you to know that not all stress is bad. That’s right!!! There’s a difference between good stress and bad stress (or eustress, as researchers call it), and learning to master stress and turn it into a positive response for your bodymind is the key to making more mindful decisions.

Since you’re not facing a physical threat at this very moment (I hope!), your bodymind isn’t triggering the fight-or-flight biological stress response. But you could very easily invoke it  in reaction to not getting to work on time, being misunderstood, misplacing our phone, being challenged, getting caught in a lie, getting stuck in traffic, losing our keys, losing out on an opportunity, missing a deadline, and so on. When our sense of self (our ego) is challenged, the ego response is the most common biological stress response—and carries with it the same physiological reaction as fight-or-flight.

The ego is the realm of I, me, mine—it’s our sense of self, our sense of ownership of people, things, and experiences. When that ownership is questioned or one of our boundaries is contested or attacked, we lash out to defend it or shut down in resignation. Think of all the things you feel as though you own: your house; your car; your school; your city, state, town, and maybe your country; your partner; your kids (get over that one now); your company; your religion; your office, your neighborhood; your clothes; your TV channel; your musical group; your favorite song; your phone; your shoes; your sport, your athlete, and your team; your show; your actor, writer, or teacher . . . get the point?

You may have attachments to—and deep fondness
for all these other things in your life, but you don’t really own them. Ask yourself right now, What do I really own?, and let the answers flow for a few moments.

Our Spectrum of Emotions

The ego response has the whole spectrum of fight-flight reactions woven into its emotional expressions. The fight version of the ego response may manifest as reactive, angry, argumentative, caustic, aggressive, or abrasive behavior. The flight version of the ego response can be expressed by emotionally closing down, biting your tongue, throwing your hands up, shutting someone out, or withdrawing, such as refusing to converse with another person or giving them only terse replies.

You have shut down to escape the threat—except you haven’t escaped it. You’re marinating in it! More extreme forms of emotional flight are expressed through non-nourishing escapist behaviors, which you can read more about in my book destressifying.  The emotional responses to stress are well documented. Here are just a few of the ways we respond when our needs aren’t met or when we detect a threat to our sense of self:

  • Harsh or defensive attitude
  • Sarcasm or shutdown
  • Impatience and reactivity
  • Unclear and knee-jerk thinking
  • Overwhelm and procrastination
  • Surges of anxiety or depression

This emotional version of the fight-or-flight response is triggered by your autonomic nervous system as you detect a threat to the boundaries of your ego, creating the exact same physiological self-preservation reactions outlined in destressifying. When the ego or reactive stress response kicks in, this is what your body does:

  • You start to breathe more
  • Your blood pressure and your pulse begin to stress your
  • Blood rushes into the muscles in your arms and legs.
  • Your stress hormones (adrenaline, cortisol, glucagon)
  • Your blood sugar
  • Blood leaves your digestive tract, so you stop digesting.
  • Your growth hormone and sex hormones
  • Your immune system shuts
  • Your platelets become plump and sticky, thickening your

Sound familiar?

Reaching for SODA

There’s a powerful tool I have taught to thousands of highly pressured businesspeople on their way to living a destressified life. I’d love for you to join the club. The tool is called Reaching for SODA. I know. It sounds kooky, but it’s highly effective in preventing you from blurting out that harsh, unkind, and regrettable word. It will guarantee that you won’t send that toxic, nuclear e-mail to some- one, copying everyone you both know. And if you’re someone who declares, “I say what I think,” Reaching for SODA will ensure that you say it in an emotionally intelligent way.

We are never our best when we’re behaving like a junkyard dog, shutting down, or acting passive-aggressive. This technique might just be the one that saves you in the moment. When you find yourself emotionally constricting in any way and notice your emotional tell, think SODA:

  • Stop
  • Observe
  • Detach
  • Awaken

Maybe you are in a heated discussion that’s getting hotter. Or perhaps something just occurred that’s frustrating or angering you, and you’re feeling the need to vent. Or maybe you’re typing that nuclear e-mail to someone, and it’s laced with zingers. As soon as you detect your emotional tell (which I define in depth in destressifying) or feel the anxiety surge into your belly or the tightening come into your chest or the heat rise into your throat—Reach for SODA:

Stop whatever you are doing or thinking. Just stop. Silently whisper to yourself, Stop! Remember, this whole exercise takes less than 5 seconds.

Observe yourself—where you are, whom you’re with, what’s going on from a witnessing perspective. Feel your- self rise up to the top of the room, observing yourself with no opinion. Keep rising up until you can objectively see yourself and the other person or irritant and simply view them as two children of God. Sometimes I’ve had to rise to the top of the building or even the moon before I was able to observe objectively!

Detach—for just a moment—from the drama, charge, and emotion of the situation and take a long, slow deep breath in. At the same time, ever so subtly, step, lean, or (if you are sitting) roll back a few inches. Then take a long, slow exhale, which will bring some release from the turbulence. In this process you’ve created some energetic distance (through breathing) and physical distance (through lean- ing or stepping back) between you and the irritant.

Awaken to a better version of yourself, the part of you that makes you feel proud of how you respond to life. Awaken a hidden aspect of yourself—perhaps the part of you that trusts or is brave, grounded, or forgiving—the part of you that’s “better than this.” Stay in this space for a few seconds and simply breathe. Observe your higher traits such as strength, confidence, and compassion, and let them be introduced into the moment. We’ve all heard, “What would Buddha do?” or “What would Jesus do?” At this point in the process, ask yourself, What would the best version of me do or say right now? At this moment, the reactive aspect of yourself will transform in seconds to your most relaxed version.

Even at the height of a battle of words, taking some of the emotional charge out of the moment will allow you to think more clearly and make a better choice. Reaching for SODA can stop you from having regrets later in the day as your emotional intelligence blossoms and blooms while your stress level eases. Essentially, when you Reach for SODA, you introduce a brief interruption in your conditioned stress-response mechanism and stop the trajectory of whatever emotional hostage taking was about to occur. Reaching for SODA actually allows you to quickly wind down the emotional charge that was starting to build up.

Once you’re on the other side of your deactivated reactive response, infinite possibilities await you, and—with a clearer head—you can make a more conscious choice. destressifying techniques like Reaching for SODA are critical in helping all of us transcend the physical and emotional impact of our more primitive responses.

This week, let’s stay mindful of how our body reacts when confronted with stress, and take steps to clear our mind, bring ourselves back to the present moment and begin to communicate more clearly and non-violently. In the meantime, I’ll see you in THE GAP!!

Peace. -d

Mantra: Aham Brahmasmi

This weekend I’m in Philadelphia speaking at the Hay House I Can Do It! Conference. I’m so excited to connect with everyone in the great City of Brotherly Love!! Philly is a city with a deep and rich American history and has played integral roles in the founding of our nation. It’s a city where our founding fathers came together to bring their vision — their dreams — for the future to fruition. So in that spirit I’ve pulled a favorite meditation of mine from the archives: Leaning in the Direction of Your Dreams.

You have your dreams and visions, you’ve set your intentions. Now it’s time for reflection and asking the core question, “What will it take? What trait – what skill set – what divine quality will I need to awaken to shift me from where I am to where I want to be?”

This requires honesty and your willingness to shine a bright light on all the shadowy areas of your life. Through honest reflection, we are able to see what we need and don’t have right now. Then it is TAKING THE STEP — leaning in that direction — that keeps the motion and momentum flowing so that your manifestation process unfolds with greater grace and ease.

Hello Spiritual Warriors!! and welcome to this week’s edition of The Source on goal setting.

In his timeless classic Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote:

“We should be blessed if we lived in the present always, and did not spend our days in atoning for the neglect of past opportunities. We loiter in winter while it is already spring. In a pleasant spring morning, all men’s sins are forgiven.”

We spend so much time “loitering in winter.” But, we also spend a whole bunch of time “loitering” in next winter – projecting, predicting, worrying, and fantasizing about the future.

Where does that leave us? Not spending very much time being brilliant in the present moment!

It’s important to have goals, targets, and ambitions. If we don’t, how can we truly achieve or fulfill our dreams? But, if we spend those precious moments living in the future, we are not seizing this sacred, precious present moment. We are not brilliantly executing in the now.

Have you ever been with a friend, loved one, or co-worker, and your mind is so distantly in the future or past, that they are speaking to us and we are oblivious to it? In those moments, we are neither with them or with the thing in our mind… we are nowhere.

If all we do is think about our goals; [tweet_dis]if all we do is stress about what may or may not happen, we are depriving ourselves from being magnificent in the here and now[/tweet_dis]; that is where all the sweet, vital nectar of life is flowing. And, if we are neither here nor there, then we are missing out on the opportunity to execute brilliantly.

We see it all the time in sports. The stakes are high… winning the game is within reach. But the athlete is not in the present, so the end-result is less-than brilliant execution.

We had an opportunity to witness this during the Rio Olympics. If all those gold medal winners – Simone Biles Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Simone Manuel – were thinking about their press conferences instead of brilliantly executing, they probably would not have been so purposefully following through on their years of training. We don’t remember the names of those who were not fully present. Maybe their heads were in the past or in the future? We’ll never know… and maybe even they don’t know.

But you can make a commitment right now to get clear on your goal, crystalize the target, set your course, and then execute brilliantly, and deliver a performance worthy of a gold medal winner.

Early next year, I’m hosting the first ever Manifesting Your Dream Life! Workshop, where for 4 days, we will get clear on our goals, release blockages to achieving them, set our course, and take steps to execute brilliantly. We’ll also meditate every day and you’ll learn the ancient practice of BirthStar Mantra Meditation!!! We’ve just announced early-bird tuition and I’d love for you to join me in making 2017 the most amazing year of our lives. You can read more about it below.

In the meantime, keep meditating!! Share this video with your loved ones, friends, and co-workers so everyone can be on the same page as you soar into your dream life.

And I’ll see you in the gap! Peace. -davidji

Mantra: Yaam haam om

This week’s healing vibrations meditation will help us lighten our heart and awaken our voices. All compassion starts with self-compassion. If we are not rooting for ourselves in every moment, how can we root for others? If you can’t empathize with your own plight, then you are not connected to your own heart.

Over the years we may have lost our self-expression, and constricted our voice from being heard. But now’s the time to start listening to our divine inner voices and empower them by awakening our throat chakra (the fifth chakra or vishuddha), the center of our expression and voice.

Let’s also expand our hearts, the manipura chakra; our love, forgiveness, compassion for ourselves by strengthening this chakra. By strengthening the power of our manipura, we allow our life energy to flow freely so that we can experience the joyful energy that fuels all our intentions and helps us realize our deepest dreams and desires.

Hello Spiritual Warriors!!! and welcome to another week of self reflection in The Source. This week we’ve been diving into the power of listening. Listening to the world around you and listening to your Self.

But, it’s really hard to listen when the noise around you and the noise inside of you is really loud. It can manifest itself as anxiety, fear, desire, anger, jealousy, shame, or depression. And these states of mind unfold every day preventing us from being in flow, from performing simple actions, from following through on our intentions, from getting where we need to be, and from achieving our dreams.

In the ancient teachings of yoga and Vedanta, these destructive emotions are referred to as kleshas. The English translation for klesha is obstacle. And we could all use a little help sometimes in moving past or removing the obstacles in our life.

Connecting to the stillness and silence that rests within can help to proactively loosen the power of these obstacles. And, that’s why starting each day with a daily meditation practice can help set the table for smoother sailing throughout the day. But when you stub your toe, or receive a NO, or find yourself stuck, that’s when we need to dig a little deeper and call for help… from the inside.

Deep within rests all the strength, courage, and resilience you need. But there are times when the waterfall of emotions clouds you from that simple truth. And in that moment, you need a spark to kick-start your fortitude. In that moment, awakening a powerful archetype in your life – someone you have praised or admired for overcoming obstacles in their life – can add inspiration and velocity to your process.

For many years, when I’ve found myself facing an obstacle, I awaken my favorite klesha-removing archetype: the Hindu God Ganesha. According to he Ancient teachings, the pot-bellied, solution-oriented, elephant-headed Ganesha rests in the root chakra – the Muladhara energy center – at the base of your spine. He is the foundation and guide for all the other chakras, as well as the foundation for every aspect of your life. He is the personification of the Universal, sacred vibration OM. And his big-belly is said to contain the past, present, and future – as well as the sun and the moon.

Ganesha is known as the Lord of Beginnings – and he is celebrated at the start of any new venture, project, relationship, or trajectory. Whenever an obstacle appears unexpectedly, I meditate, begin my gratitude practice, and then awaken the energy of Ganesha in my life. And then I lean in the direction of my dream, take my step, and merge into the solution. This practice works and I recommend it for you as well.

So the next time, an obstacle appears in your life, first take a breath, then get still and silent, and then invoke the archetype in your life that best represents the characteristic of perseverance, courage, moving through change, and transcending obstacles. Email me at info@davidji.com and let me know who your archetype is and how success is awakening inside.

In the meantime, I’ll see you in the gap! Peace. –davidjidji & peaches
