Source Life Tools Brahmavihara Karuna

Hello Spiritual Warrior!

This week we continue our journey into a four-part series on The Brahmaviharas, aka the Four Virtues. They are Metta (unconditional loving kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (empathetic joy), and Upekka (equanimity). When we awaken these four virtues, or “boundless abodes” in our life, we live with greater grace and ease. We live in more alignment, and with a deeper connection to source.

The second of the four virtues is Karuna (compassion).

Living a life filled with compassion is a beautiful way to be a kind and generous person. When we can look at others through a compassionate lens, everything changes. We live with a more open heart, we feel a deeper sense that on this planet we are living in community and looking out for each other, and we see that nobody is above us or below us – we are all equal.

There are various depths to this topic of compassion, however. The first level of compassion is sympathy – feeling sorry for someone else. Then we develop this further into empathy – where we feel others pain, and are able to put ourselves in their shoes. Moving further up on the compassion ladder, we start rooting for someone’s suffering to end, and then finally we may find ourselves being willing to bear the burden of someone else’s suffering.

However, none of this evolution can take place unless we are first and foremost being compassionate with ourselves – giving ourselves the gifts of:

  • Self-kindness
  • Self-compassion
  • Self-forgiveness
  • Self-love

Self-care allows yourself to nourish yourself in such a way that you have more to give to others because your cup is full. When we don’t take care of ourselves, it becomes impossible to care for others in an open and authentic way.

Karuna is very powerful, and is never-ending. The compassion we share with ourselves automatically begins to extend towards others, and then that circles back to us once again. And this is how we transform the world by transforming ourselves.
