Life Tools: Practicing Presence

Hello Spiritual Warrior!

This week we dive into practicing present moment awareness.

How do we make the universe our ally? How do we make decisions that are right for us? How do we move forward in life with trust knowing that whatever is happening, we are able to face it with a sense of calmness, clarity and confidence and we know exactly how to proceed?

It all begins with connecting to the present moment. In this moment, right here and now.

It is from this sacred, precious present moment, that we live without fear or regret, without hope or anticipation, and without attachment to outcomes. And from that space, we are best able to make decisions, choose responses, and go forward with peace in our heart.

– yogastha kuru karmani –

Establish yourself in the present moment, and then perform action.

The phrase yogastha kuru karmani is from the ancient text, the Bhagavad Gita, in which Lord Krishna counsels the great warrior Arjuna on the purpose of life. Arjuna is deep in the midst of a profound spiritual dilemma, as he knows his purpose in life is to be a fierce warrior, but he is agonized by fear, grief, uncertainty, sadness, and regret as he readies his troops for a calamitous battle in a huge family feud, pitting friend against friend, cousin against cousin, teacher against student, and patriarch against son.

As he stands with Krishna as his charioteer in the middle of the vast plains of Kurukshetra in northern India, Arjuna gazes intently at the two opposing armies of his relatives that now face each other poised for battle. He is paralyzed by the gravity of the task before him—leading the charge of one army against the other and, in the process, causing the death of hundreds of his friends, esteemed teachers, and relatives. He asks his divine guide how he can possibly live with his decision, and Krishna replies with a spiritual dialogue spanning 18 chapters on yoga, self-realization, dharma (or purpose), devotion to God, the meaning of life, and ultimately, the nature of reality. When Arjuna asks his higher power, “Oh dear Lord, how shall I move forward in life?” Krishna replies in Chapter 2, Verse 48, “Yogastha kuru karmani—establish yourself in the present moment, and then perform action.”

Establish yourself in the present moment, and then perform action.

Now, while we might not be preparing for battle like Arjuna, but we can take this concept to heart and use it as a way to move forward when we simply don’t know which way to go – which decision to make, which path to follow, or which response to give.

when you feel depressedWhen we become fully present, we are able to set forth from an unconditioned space in which we are centered, grounded, connected, and clear.

We flow with the universe, instead of trying to swim upstream.

When we try to control the outcome of our actions, we infuse our thoughts and actions with anxiety, fear, wishing and wanting – and all of these things pull us away from being present. They infuse our mind with attachment and strife. And when we interact with the world from that space, we set ourselves up to receive more of that back to us.

When we surrender, trust, and simply be in this sacred, precious, present moment, it allows us the opportunity to choose whatever comes next with clarity, patience, and peace.

With presence, we are more open and centered. We are not just better able to make decisions about moving forward, we are also better able to handle what we are receiving from outside of us from a space of love and acceptance.

This is how we become the best versions of ourselves. This is how we change the world and live in alignment with our heart’s desire and our soul’s purpose.
