Removing Obstacles

Hello Spiritual Warrior!

This week we are taking a look at some of the causes of our suffering – it always comes down to the five Kleshas, aka the five obstacles, or five poisons.

Asmita = Ego. We believe that we are separate from the universe, and then act in accordance with that belief. We fail to remember that we ARE the universe and that there is no separation between us and everything else in existence. Aham Brahmasmi, Baby!

Avidya = Ignorance, or confusing permanence and impermanence. Remember that ‘energy can never be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed’. Ayam atma brahman – my soul, and the universal spirit, are the same thing. We are all eternal beyond this body we are housed in.

Raaga = Attachment. All of the things we are attached to, from people to things to belief systems. We cling to them, and that creates suffering because we know that they will eventually change.

Dvesha = Aversion. All of the things we don’t like and push away, from people to things to belief systems. We push them away, which causes suffering because we are trying so hard to not have that thing close to us.

Abhinivesha = Fear of Death. Almost every fear, after being distilled through all of the various lenses, comes down to a fear of death and knowing that our lives will end. We overcome this by celebrating the present moment, and starting a gratitude practice so that we can see all of the abundance and prosperity that exists around us at every single moment.

How do you see these five Kleshas showing up in your life? What are some steps that you can take to alleviate some of your suffering?

I invite you to contemplate, journal, and consider all of the ways these Kleshas are present in your life. Doing so invites us to respond to life, versus reacting to it. And from that space, we can ultimately learn to live with more peace, ease and grace.
