Happy weekend, Spiritual Warrior!

Our skin is the largest organ in our body. In fact, the average human is covered in 18 square feet of flesh!! And because of that, the nourishing power of touch can have a profound healing impact on every cell that rests only millimeters beneath the surface. Whether you receive a caress, a hug, or a massage, modern science is now revealing long-lasting positive benefits to our physical AND emotional wellbeing.

Only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth, and that is not speaking it. -Naomi Wolf

Hello sweet Meditators!!!! And welcome to this week’s edition of The Source in which we empower ourselves to find our voice.

I’ve been teaching all weekend with my very special friend and soul brother, James Van Praagh, at our Soul Awakening 2017 event in San Diego. That’s why I pulled an oldie-but-goodie video to complement this week’s theme.

It’s not always easy to find our voice amid all the other voices (inside & outside) that are speaking to us and for us. Right?

A question I am frequently asked is, “How can I tell if the voice I’m hearing is the divine whisper of the universe or simply my ego?”

So often we drive ourselves crazy over where the voice is coming from, or with such maddening questions as, “Whose voice is it anyway?” “Is it my authentic voice?” and “How can I let my voice be heard through the choir of voices that surround me each day?”

To me, these feel like distractions in the true quest to unveil our voice.

As you know, I believe there are many paths to one-ness and certainly many paths to finding your voice in a given moment. So many of us live lives of quiet desperation – deferring our dreams or using the excuses of time, money, or others as why we aren’t expressing our unique gifts or our special talents.

To cut through the swirl, so you can most effectively find your voice, here are Seven Steps to Finding your Voice. Use one, all, or any combination of the seven to spark your voice:

  1. Accept that you have a unique & special voice that is pregnant with possibilities…as the divine universe sweeps into you with each breath, give permission to the four unique parts of your being – your mind, body, heart, & spirit. Open these magnificent gifts and see how they can be applied to your life right now.
  2. Regularly spend time in stillness and silence – at least 15 minutes each day so you can quiet the fluctuations of your mind and ease the emotional turbulence in your life. From that stillness, the answers will come.
  3. Cultivate your ability to listen to the world around you. Daily meditation leads to heightened awareness. What angers you? What makes you cry? What gives you hope? What gets you passionate? What gets your motor running? Listen to your emotions throughout the day and feel what moves you.
  4. Tap into your passion overlap! Bubbling below our surface, are our own personal desires to love with passion, to live with passion, to learn with passion, and to add value to the moment – to contribute passionately. So where’s your voice? Identify the overlap between those four desires and you’ll find the seed of your voice!!!!!
  5. Get really objective. See yourself from another perspective. Take out your journal & write about yourself in the third person. Look at yourself as you would a character in a book and write about what inspires that person and how they will make a mark on the world. When you’ve been writing for a bit – flip it around, make the character yourself, and see how your voice unfolds.
  6. After you’ve meditated or been in stillness and silence for a few minutes, place your hand on your heart and ask: “Where am I holding back?” “In what instances am I biting my tongue?” “Where could I speak up a bit more?” “Where could I step into the unknown with a little more power?” IF I KNEW I COULD NOT FAIL…what would be my baby step?”
  7. If someone really believed in you…saw your strengths…validated your gift…and could support your dream – then what? Listen to your heart. And go do that!!! Find a teacher, a mentor, a confirmer, and a coach.

Often we believe that time or money are the impediments for fulfilling our dreams or finding our voice, but in reality we fear we will not live up to our vision or worse – THAT WE WILL.

So take baby steps…start where you are…and give yourself permission to speak from your heart. Remember, all the answers rest within. Be gentle. And come from a place of stillness and silence. And let your voice be heard!!!!!!!!! Peace. -davidji

Happy weekend, Spiritual Warrior!

Sometimes we all need a little help, a little companionship, to take our life from where we are to where we want to be.

It can get lonely with all the distractions and challenges of life. But you’re not alone! Summon one passenger to ride with you — summon your spirit guide, your support system, someone you can call on for answers, for truth! Identify a trait or quality — strength, insight, abundance, surrender — that you’d like to awaken in yourself, and which divine being might inherit that trait.

Mantra: You have to listen to the meditation!

Happy weekend, Spiritual Warrior!!! I’m sooooo excited to announce my new book Sacred Powers: The Five Secrets to Awakening Transformation will be released Dec. 12.

If you’re reading these words, you’ve already begun your journey on the spiritual path, or perhaps you’re finding yourself at the crossroads of some potentially defining moment in your life. Maybe you’re sensing a feeling of longing for something beyond what exists right now. Or you have confusion about the situation in which you currently find yourself. There may even be an indescribable sensation inside you—a sort of knowing that there’s something more, something deeper, something better . . . a place where you can finally experience true love, real abundance, greater fulfillment, or simply peace of mind in the midst of all the chaos that surrounds you. Oftentimes we simply feel trapped by our current circumstances or locked into a non-nourishing pattern.

But there is a doorway to the liberation you now seek. In fact, there are five doorways and five paths that you can walk as you gain your footing on your spiritual journey. These paths are available to all seekers whether this is your first step into spirituality or whether you have been practicing for many years.

What has happened in the past can’t be changed.

We can’t unring the bell, but we can move forward . . .

and how you choose to move forward from this moment,

is the choice that will determine the fabric of your life.

Stepping through this doorway of spirituality will take you on a lifelong journey that will give you the power to make the most brilliant choice at the exact perfect time—one that will align you completely with the Universe; take your life to the next level; and awaken the divine nature that rests at your very core. Yes, you have Sacred Powers of Transformation resting deep within. Not simply the power to change but to truly transform your life to a place of deep fulfillment. Transformation is evolution. And it validates the eternal truth that you are never stuck. You always have the power to shift your life from where you are to where you’d like to be and where you truly need to be.

This weekend’s free meditation is a sneak peak into my new book. The Sacred Power of Intention & The Sacred Power of Attention are a powerful tools for manifesting our dreams and making solution-oriented, conscious choices. Wherever you shine your light of attention, that thing will be become more prominent in your life. And that’s why intention is the partner of attention. If our intention are to raise our vibration while our attention is on a particular issue then we will be solution oriented!

Remember that we have a choice in every moment to bring our attention and then we have another choice: what is the intention I want to bring to that moment? This week, let’s use the mantra san kalpa ritam: san kalpa is the subtle intention and ritam is aligning it with the rhythm of the universe.

 width=What is “Sacred Powers” About?

A Native American folktale speaks eloquently to awakening your Sacred Powers of Transformation. A Cherokee elder is sitting around a bonfire with his grandchild, teaching him the essentials of life.

“There is a battle going on inside me,” he says to the child.“It is a constant fight, and it is between two wolves. One wolf is filled with anger, envy, jealousy, fear, regret, shame, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, false pride, superiority, and ego.

“The other wolf is filled with humility, gratitude, acceptance, patience, joy, peace, love, hope, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, and compassion.” He leans in close to his grandchild and whispers, “The same fight is going on inside you, my sweet boy—and inside every other person, too.” The child grows silent, thinking about the profound nature of this lesson, and then asks, “So Grandfather . . . which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee smiles with a knowing look and replies, “The one you feed.”

Traveling the world, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures… it’s a reminder that we are all connected in this universe. And at our most human level, we have many more things in common than we have differences.

The many stages of life, jobs, careers, or relationships, can create vulnerability to FEAR and anxiety. These transitional times bring on levels of uncertainty. We’re not the person we once were nor are we the one we’re about to become.

So we need to establish a life of living in a GROUNDED state. YOU are and should be your own ROCK. Grounding practices will assist in maintaining focus, clarity, grace, & ease during life’s many transitions.

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Source!!! This week we touch on one of the fundamental steps toward living a stress-free life.

The first step to destressifying is the mastery of our needs – identifying, prioritizing, and meeting our vast needs with greater regularity. Virtually all of the stress we experience each day is a direct result of our needs not being met in one capacity or another.

Most frequently, the reason our needs aren’t met is because we haven’t identified them or recognized them. In the non-stop, go-go of life, we rarely take the time for a thorough self-analysis. It’s too overwhelming and too complex. But destressifying by mastering our needs is really easy and our exploration of it will shine a spotlight into the darkness.

Since one of the most popular definitions of stress is how you respond when your needs are not met, let’s make that our starting point to destressifying. If we can figure out more effective ways to meet our needs, we will have less stress.

There are two ways to most effectively overcome stress related to unmet needs. We can:

  1. Shift our stress response – essentially, change what we do and say when our needs are not met, and
  2.  Increase the odds that our needs will be met – by gaining clarity on our expectations, better understanding the situation, taking clear steps to meet our needs, and communicating them to others more consciously.

And whether we master one or both of these approaches, just putting some attention on these solutions will quickly make a difference in how we feel in each moment and ultimately how we feel about our life in general.

The deeper work of destressifying – starting with the mastery of our needs – shifts us internally so we have fewer unmet needs.

Fewer unmet needs = less stress, which applies directly to our interpretation of life and our perception of stress.

So let’s start at the very beginning by exploring the concept of our basic needs.

What Are My Needs?

Each of the 8 billion people on the planet have 8 billion unique interpretations of life, 8 billion unique combinations of needs & desires, and 8 billion unique expressions of reality through our thoughts, words, and actions. Isn’t it amazing how unique you are?

Yet, with all that uniqueness and individuality, all 8 billion of us seem to share the same basic categories of needs.

width=In the 1940’s, the American psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote “A Theory of Human Motivation,” in which he outlined five universal categories of human needs. He has some serious street cred!

Maslow taught at Brooklyn College and the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute, and was Chairman of the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University. From 1967 to 1968 he was President of the American Psychological Association.

It’s been said that most of our motivation comes from fear or greed – the old “carrot-or-stick” punishment and reward paradigm. Maslow believed that individuals possess a basic set of motivation systems unrelated to rewards. These basic needs are said to motivate people toward fulfillment when they are unmet.

Also, the need to fulfill such needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without water, the thirstier they get… without sleep, the more tired they get… without food, the hungrier they become.

Prioritizing Your Needs

Maslow prioritized the various categories of universal needs based on the importance each of us organically places on fulfilling them. And, he demonstrated that they have a hierarchy of their own and that our lower order needs must be fulfilled before higher order needs can be realized.

Yet, once a specific level of needs has been reasonably satisfied, we are able to go about fulfilling the next level of needs, ultimately reaching the highest level of fulfillment, which he referred to as self-actualization.

That’s right. With all of our individual distinctiveness we each share the exact same hierarchy of needs. You, me, your parents, those in your life, and everyone with whom you interact – the barista in your local coffee shop, your dentist, your co-workers, your kids, your boss, your local police officers, the gate agent at the airport, your neighbors, your friends, even your shrink! – all have the same needs and are motivated to process & fulfill them in the same order.

The Pyramid

Envision a pyramid with five levels. At the base of our needs “pyramid” are our survival needs – what we need to stay alive. These are our basic physiological & biological needs of breathing, drinking, eating, sleeping, peeing, pooping, and having sex. Once we meet those basic biological needs, we can aspire to meeting the next set of needs in the pyramid – our safety needs.

We need to be able to have a roof over our head to protect us from the elements; we need to know we can go to work without being shot at; we need to feel that our possessions are safe; and that we are protected by some social codes or laws.

The next level is our social needs, which include belongingness, love, our relationships, and all that comes with that, essentially the needs of our heart – attention, affection, appreciation, and acceptance. Once this core group of needs are met, we can move on to a more evolutionary grouping of needs known as our esteem needs, which include personal self-esteem, status, titles, prestige, positions, achievement, managerial responsibility – even mastery of our chosen field.

Maslow argued that once these four sets of needs are met – survival, safety, social, and esteem – an individual is primed for the fifth and final stage in the hierarchy – self-actualization – the state where our needs are met and we help others to meet their needs.

You can dive more deeply into Maslow’s needs and further explore which of your needs need attention in Chapter 5 of my book destressifying. The self-examination process is fascinating!!!

I hope you take time this week to practice the exercise I introduce in this week’s the video. Share your experiences in the comments below!!! In the meantime, I’ll see you in the gap!!!

Peace. -davidji

May the wisdom and compassion of all beings increase, now and in the future.
May we clearly see all the barriers we erect between ourselves and others to be as insubstantial as our dreams.
May we appreciate the great perfection of all phenomena.
May we continue to open our hearts and minds, in order to work ceaselessly for the benefit of all beings.
May we go to the places that scare us.
May we lead the life of a warrior.”
― Pema Chödrön

Breathe in the unconditional loving kindness of the Universe. Together, weave some sweet metta into the fabric of our lives. Imagine the possibilities. Kindness matters. Peace. -d
