In 2012, I wrote Secrets of Meditation as an invitation for those who found themselves on the spiritual path. When we begin to journey into the depths of our soul and start reflecting on the meaning of our life, sometimes we find ourselves totally overwhelmed or confused.

Many of the teachings I encountered on my journey had rules, rigid practices, and were filled with dogma about the “right” way to meditate. You know I love dogs but I’m not so fond of dogma. Meditation should be fun, expansive, nourishing and light-filled. And so I set out to share all the different teachings I had encountered or immersed in so that others could find their way to this life-affirming practice in their own way and select the style that most resonated. I developed my Masters of Wisdom & Meditation Teacher Training based on the same principle. Meditation should be personal, uplifting, heart healing, and so much more.

Just a few days after Secrets of Meditation was released, I received hundreds of emails from readers around the world thanking me for sharing all the different styles, techniques, and practices without any rules. It won the Nautilus Book Award and many people thanked me for writing the first book that empowered them to meditate & yet gave them permission to do it in their own way – and this was my greatest joy because this transformational practice should be something we run to not run from.

As the years went on, my practice continued to evolve. I began teaching law enforcement, members of the military and people in the corporate world to destressify. I launched several stress management programs & mindful performance trainings for companies whose employees were feeling the overwhelm of high-pressure careers. So I wrote destressifying as a way for the mainstream world to access the ancient teachings and truly shift their lives without getting caught up in the woo woo aspects of this timeless wisdom. And it took off. destressifying became an Amazon.com #1 bestseller and became my second book to win the Nautilus Book Award.

As my teaching continued to evolve, I developed even more effective ways of guiding people to re-engage their practices & I was researching some very cool advanced techniques based on the newest brain science. In my explorations, I discovered additional amazing meditation practices that no one seemed to be teaching… and I wanted to share them with the world!!

So I picked up the original manuscript for Secrets of Meditation and began channeling from my heart. Five chapters, and 150 pages later, I had poured out my soul into the best meditation guidance I had in me…

I merged that with my story of spiritual awakening in the original book and BOOM! my revised edition was born. The two manuscripts merged like Soul into Spirit, in one giant aham brahmasmi baby! moment. And I am now thrilled to share with you the new, fresh, revised edition of Secrets of Meditation – containing my most powerful & practical guidance on taking your life to the next level through meditation. This expanded edition includes four new chapters, worksheets for setting intentions and tracking your progress, links to online guided meditations, the latest scientific research on mindfulness, and so much more. And on top of that, Hay House invited me to record the audiobook, which I had been hoping to do for all these years.

Hello, Spiritual Warrior! Welcome to this week’s edition of The Source in which we explore present moment awareness & mindful performance.

Around the 5th century, the ancient Hindu text, the Bhagavad Gita was written. Chapter 2; verse 48 says, “yogastha kuru karmani,” which means establish yourself in the present moment, and then perform action.

Right before you read these words, you were thinking about something. Perhaps you were replaying a scene from the past; or maybe you were projecting some outcome into the future. Only the moment where you clicked the link to open this page were you actually in the moment – and even that may have been a conditioned click while your mind swirled around other issues of your life.

We rarely spend time being mindful of what is happening in this moment because we’re living our lives in the past and the future. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing – it just is how our brain works. We have conditioned ourselves to fill any gaps in that flow of activity with more activity.

Think about your day-to-day: How long does it take when you arrive home to talk, text, pick up a remote control, put on music, or the TV, or log on? When you get into your car alone, how long does it take until you put on music, call someone, text someone? We are creatures of habit and we habitually fill our stillness and silence with movement, sound, and activity.

Yet at our core, we ARE stillness and silence – pure unbounded, unconditioned consciousness. There are many kinds of activity but only one stillness and one silence. Every time we meditate we connect to that space… that nothingness… that NO THING ness. And when we return to our waking state after meditation, we bring back a thimbleful of stillness, silence, and our unconditioned self. Over time… that becomes you.

So how do we get there? And how deep do we need to go to get to the Truth? How high do we need to soar to connect to our very essence?

We are already there, but the mist of daily illusion swirling about us often obscures the Light that is inside. But through BEing present, we can give our self permission to settle down just a bit so we can truly experience quietude and NO thing ness – we can actually experience pure, unbounded consciousness. When we settle down even more deeply, we can hear the whispers of the divine and tap into source at the most innocent level. And then we can take our next step into the realm of pure potentiality where our next thought, our next word, our next deed…is magnificent, unconditioned, and full of possibilities.

The present moment is always within you – always resting at the core of who you are. And you can access it at any moment wherever you are…whatever you are doing. Just like the space between your thoughts is who you really are, the space between your breaths is another facet of the pure, unbounded consciousness that rests within you.

This week, let’s commit… me & you… to establishing ourselves in the present moment and performing as our best possible selves!!!

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Source in which we explore the idea that there really is something called good stress… and it’s called eustress.

In my video, you probably heard me mention something called eustress. As I briefly described, good stress is the thrill that we experience when we feel excited but not really threatened—taking on a challenge that is a bit beyond our reach but attainable if we give it our all. In a classic eustress scenario, our goal is in sight; but to achieve it requires a commitment of time, energy, and will. In the process, we dig deep to summon perseverance, courage, determination, or motivation. And in these core moments of deep immersion into the experience, we are fully present in the task or mission.

In my book “destressifying” I go really deep into the types of stress and how each affects us in different ways.

Often described as being “in the zone,” the eustress experience creates a scenario where we have no sense of time. In those moments of what modern science refers to as flow, we become the fusion of focus, chemical rushes, and feelings of accomplishment. We’ve all been there—performing some challenging task with such deep absorption that we feel we are one with whatever we’re doing. These are the times we’ve said the perfect words at the perfect moment, run the perfect race, held the room captive as we’ve told the most entertaining story, played tennis like Roger Federer, gardened as if we were one with the earth, cooked as if we were master chefs.

There are so many archetypal superstars we have admired and drawn inspiration from over the course of our lives who have publicly exhibited that state of flow in the extreme. Some of them may also have had their demons; but in their peak performance moments, they tapped into a brilliant, dynamic, creative flow that impacted the world and set them apart from their peers. In basketball, we look to Michael Jordan; in media influence, we think of Oprah Winfrey; in hockey, Wayne Gretzky; in dance, Mikhail Baryshnikov; in comedy, Robin Williams and Richard Pryor; in technology, Steve Jobs; in the world of inventions, Elon Musk; in social change, Martin Luther King, Jr. The list goes on and on. But those are only a few of the more famous people who have thrived in the moment of their eustress. There are billions who do it every day.

The triggers for eustress can be simple activities or when trying anything new where the outcome is unknown, such as knitting a scarf competing in a tournament, or performing surgery. We can even reinterpret what we feared as a threat to be a challenge and shift our mind-set from “Oh no!” to “Bring it on!” Ideally, when the goal has been reached, we feel deep satisfaction, which rewards the effort. But these are the three key aspects of eustress:

  • We interpret the stressor as a positive experience (this is critical).
  • We consider it a worthy endeavor.
  • We believe the activity will increase our skill level.

During and after the stressful period, we are physically and emotionally rewarded with a surge of one of our feel-good chemicals—the success hormone dopamine—which creates the feeling we have succeeded at something. I refer to it as the Eureka! Hormone. (“Eureka!” means “I’ve found it!”)

For eustress to retain its positive impact, the activity must be relatively short-lived and perceived primarily as a good experience. If the stress period goes on too long or happens too frequently, it will devolve into chronic stress, which is never good. You’ve probably experienced eustress in the past week—meeting someone who makes your heart race, rushing to get to a party or a concert and feeling giddy when you get there, making a big presentation and basking in the afterglow, playing some competitive sport and feeling like an Olympic athlete, or finishing a project or a chore you’ve been delaying and feeling the tingling of relief and reward simultaneously.

Our pulse quickens, our breath becomes short and shallow, and hormones surge through us. We can even get a bit light-headed at times as the chemicals in our body shift around. We may feel a little scared about some aspect of the activity, but the rush of excitement is short-lived, and we are challenged but never feel an actual threat to our lives.

The newest brain science has revealed that short-term acute stress actually nourishes and readies the brain for improved performance.  You can read more about those studies in my book. Whether you are a dog, a rat, or a human, that surge of eustress must be short-lived or else it turns into chronic stress, which elevates glucocorticoid stress hormones, which then suppress growth, impair memory, and actually stunt us!

This may sound like gobbledygook to you, but bear with me for a moment because I want to share something that’s truly amazing. When you experience acute stress, a burst of the stress hormone corticosterone stimulates astrocytes (the cells composing most of your brain), which then release fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). This nourishes your stem cells, turning them into new neurons and increasing the gray matter in your hippocampus. This leads to faster learning, better retention, and expanded awareness!!!

Eustress keeps life fun, vital, exciting, and chock-full of meaning. It coaxes us to stay motivated—to wake up and do it all over again. Both your body and your mind are impacted by stress; yet when the experience itself is clearly defined, is relatively short term, and has a beginning and an end, we recover quickly. Once it has ended, your bodymind (a term showing that your body and mind are a single, integrated whole) signals the “all clear” alert, and all the chemicals and hormones triggered by the stressful moment ease back down, leaving you in the afterglow of a feel-good, dopa- mine orgasm—fist pumping in the air, telling everyone around you about your success, and celebrating your win.

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Source in which we explore the scientific results meditation has on the brain.

Imagine that some random stranger rushes up to you and starts yelling unintelligible words right in your face! You might interpret it as a scary, potentially violent threat. And you’d have all the emotions that go along with that threat: surprise, fear, shock, terror, perhaps even anger. Picture the scenario and how you think you’d feel. Most likely your conditioned fight-or-flight response would kick in with all those chemical surges and amygdala stress-based reactions like sweating, racing heart, rapid breathing, and suppression of your immune system.

Studies have shown that people who secrete higher levels of cortisol in response to stress tend to eat more carbohydrates than people who secrete less cortisol. Increased levels of cortisol shrink the hippocampus, impacting memory formation, new brain cell development, and our ability to learn. Simultaneously, cortisol increases the size of our amygdala, keeping us in fear-based learning mode.

In my book “destressifying” I outline a meditation study at the University of Massachusetts, in concert with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School, tracked changes to the physical structure of the brain using MRI scans over 56 days. All 16 test subjects meditated on their breath for 30 minutes a day and experienced the following structural shifts:

  • An increase in the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for learning, memory, and spatial orientation
  • A decrease in the size of the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for fear, anger, and stress

As brain-imaging software develops and improves, we are finally able to look deep into the brain and see what happens when someone meditates!!! The benefits are undeniable, and by cultivating a daily meditation practice, you will feel better, sleep better, make more conscious choices, communicate more effectively improve your relationships, and finally get really clear on what it is that you want in life!!! Welcome to the first video of 2017!!! The Source is in it’s fifth year — can you believe it? This week, we’re reflecting on the new year, new opportunities, new intentions.

If you are open to a proactive daily meditation practice, then it IS true that your stress levels will drop, your life crises and turbulence will occur less and less, you’ll be more clear, more creative and less reactive to those around you. But, you have to make the commitment to your practice.

At the beginning of every year, I guide a small group of spiritual seekers through the most effective steps to take their lives to the next level. This year’s experience is called Manifesting Your Dream Life! – and over 4 days, 25 of us dive into the teachings and the practices to unfold the best year of our life. This will be our fifth year of designing and implementing customized action plans to make 2017 the most amazing year of our life. And we do it in an intimate, safe, open-hearted environment at the Meditation Nest in the SweetSpot of the Universe. Our toes are in the sand, the Pacific is our backdrop (it’s whale watching season), we’re breathing ocean air and we are meditating and diving deep into the practices to take our life to a more fulfilling space as soon as we return home.
