Hello Spiritual Warriors! & welcome to another issue of The Source – where we transcend our illusions, elevate our strengths and work on mastering our emotions.

When we perceive a life- threatening situation, we react in the moment and choose one of two basic paths of survival: to fight or to run. This self-preservation destressifying mechanism is woven into every animal on the planet and has been for tens of thousands of years. There are no saber-toothed tigers out there; and unless we’re in a war zone, we rarely experience threats to our lives. But don’t tell that to your autonomic nervous system! The stressors of today may be different, but our bodies still react in the same way: blood flow to our organs decrease, hormone levels surge, blood sugar spikes, your blood gets thick and we perspire.

(Any of this remind you of the last time you got really angry at someone or a certain situation?)

But in every moment we have a choice. We are better than our instinct to lash out or withdraw. We are stronger than that! We are more capable and blessed than we give ourselves credit for – and when we surrender to fear it is because we don’t trust. We don’t trust in the divine…we don’t trust our choices…and we don’t trust ourselves to make right decisions. There is a struggle within each of us where the worst possible scenario battles the best possible scenario for attention in a given moment.

But we must remind ourselves that we have a choice in each moment…that we can choose the best outcome or the most painful outcome. And whatever we end up choosing, will become the seed for the next moment, hour, or rest of our day – and ultimately the rest of our life!!!

DestressifyingCoverSpread_wAMZNThrough the daily practice where we use the tools of destressifying – meditating, choosing positivity, connecting with our true needs, mastering our emotions, communicating consciously, & living with purpose – we can align with our own innate pure, perfect, wholeness where we can make choices without the conditioned negativity of our past. We can make choices from an abundance mentality rather than a poverty consciousness. We can direct our thoughts to the land of pure potentiality instead of the place of limiting beliefs.

And so when we find ourselves questioning our judgment. When we hear the voice in our head telling us we are less than or not worthy, we need to know that the word TRUST can be re-configured into STRUT! And that’s how we step into our Power…by giving yourself permission to strut, to believe again, to open our heart to the possibility that whatever negativity you can dream up is not FEAR but is False. Evidence. Appearing. Real. and can easily be offset by a positive internal conversation.

Simply use the mantra, “When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be” and you will find yourself trusting more, dying to the past, and STEPPING into your power.

Accepting this moment is a beautiful teaching with many different levels. It is the root and the foundation of many wisdom traditions including Buddhist compassion teachings, the Law of Least Effort, and Christ Consciousness. But regardless of your orientation to these belief systems, we can always find personal evolution and divine awakening in accepting ….

ACCEPTING this moment is perfect, pure, whole, and every moment that has led to this moment was exactly the way it was meant to be. Imagine…this moment is the magnificent culmination of all of your choices; every experience that has woven itself in, around, and through you; and every one of the 31 million seconds that have ticked by in just this year alone! It couldn’t be any other way!!

ACCEPTING that you are a divine being who is sealed in this human body for the span of a lifetime and that you have made choices and decisions throughout your life from your highest level of consciousness at the time. Even though there are choices you may regret or torture yourself about, they are carved in stone and we must accept them, forgive ourselves, and make better choices in the future.

ACCEPTING others for what they are – not as we wish they would be. Allowing people’s differences, quirks, unique vibrations to just be and not necessarily fit into our box of how the world is supposed to be. Allowing others to be as they are. Understanding these three levels of acceptance could keep us busy for several lifetimes. I began the discussion of level one in this week’s video. Feel free to integrate it into your life and recognize that wherever you are, every moment of the past is carved in stone and for us to evolve our lives or improve our situation or find deeper fulfillment we must own the moment. Level two is where so many of us get stuck. We are our toughest critic and we know all the moments where we felt less than, or were sloppy, lazy, or casual with our decisions. We know when we were unsure of which road to take and we guessed “wrong.” We know where we could have been better, or stronger, or wiser, or more patient, or more truthful, or more engaged. But in that moment, we didn’t know it…we didn’t have access to a crystal ball of consequences; or maybe we didn’t take the time to really explore the depth of our actions or choices.

Hello Spiritual Warriors! And welcome to another transformational week of learning to resist less so we can receive more!

Like the daily practice of meditation – the process of lessening our resistance includes surrendering, accepting, detaching, and then trusting that this moment is THE moment – bringing our awareness to the fluidity and evolutionary nature of life.

When we oppose what is flowing into us, we are saying NO to the universe. We are denying our most divine nature. When we resist, we suddenly put an end to infinite possibilities. And so of course it would follow that when we resist letting go, we are also denying the Universe. There are many lessons (and growing pains) along the journey of our life, which may contribute to the underlying challenge that makes us reluctant to trust and welcome the unknown. But we can shift that non-nourishing mindset very easily and quickly by beginning the processing of ALLOWING ourselves to receive what’s being offered to us right now.

But if your hand is tightly clenched in a fist holding onto something, it’s incapable of receiving. When you resist letting go, there is only one outcome that you are carving into the moment. Simply by opening yourself to another outcome rather than one, life expands, new possibilities arise, and your choices become liberating as fear and constriction drift away.

The key to living the dream life is being open to receive.

Miracles often appear when we least expect them…when we are innocent and vulnerable to the next moment. The magic of life surges into us when we remain open without expectation & are willing to listen without assuming that we know how the universe is supposed to unfold.

As the Seventh Dalai Lama wrote, “All things found in the world and beyond are illusions created by one’s own concepts. Grasping at them but further distorts perception. Give up grasping and see things as they are. “

So, this week, let’s give up grasping… let’s give up fear… let’s give up RESISTING… let’s truly practice LETTING GO! The best is yet to come.

In one of my favorite movies — “The Shawshank Redemption” — wrongly accused Andy Dufresne (played by Tim Robbins) has a powerful conversation with fellow inmate Red Redding about his dream to escape to a sleepy seaside town in Mexico.

Welcome, Spiritual Warriors to this week’s edition of The Source on rumination versus reflection.

Rumination is a compulsion to repetitively think about the causes, decisions and potential consequences of an experience that’s creating anxiety, pain, or distress in our life. While self-reflection is healthy, and helps us make more conscious choices in the future, such as when we say out loud to ourselves, “I’ll never do that again!” The reason we stay stuck in the past is often because we haven’t given ourselves permission to let go of the self-blame involved in the situation. But if we truly are sorry AND would make a different choice, a more conscious choice, then it’s time to forgive ourselves. And in that forgiving, we free ourselves from the tether to the quicksand of the past.

It’s actually healthy to visit the land of hurts and wounds once in a while; but nobody needs to live there!

From Rumination to Reflection

At it’s best, rumination is a conditioned pattern; at its worst it’s a compulsion, sometimes even an addiction. And some of us are more prone to it than others simply because of our emotional wiring. But we can break free from the toxic cycle by introducing a pattern interrupt – essentially, a break in the negative, learned behavior.

First we have to realize that we are ruminating. This naturally comes with the development of our emotional intelligence – recognizing the emotions we are feeling and those that others may be feeling as well. Most people are numbed to the nuances of their emotions. We use generalizations such as happy or sad. But the key to mastering your emotions is cultivating a better vocabulary.

So when you are sad, run through the spectrum of emotions. Start by saying, “I am not my emotions. I have emotions.” And then place your hand on your heart, close your eyes, and ask, “What am I feeling right now?” Let answers flow and allow the sensation to go deep. As you begin the process nothing may come. That’s OK. Continue to sit with it and ask the question. At a certain point, you will realize: “I feel disappointed, or discouraged, or desperate, or panicked, or angry, or resigned, or helpless, or regret, or grief, or blame.”

Don’t block or suppress what comes. Allow it. Allow yourself to be human and truly feel your emotions. Don’t judge them. Simply realize it for what it is… an emotion. Tears may flow. Sadness may envelope you. But the key is giving it a name. This is a healthy part of self-reflection and truly understanding yourself at a deeper level. But if you find that beating yourself over these emotions has become a regular behavior, then it’s time to act. It’s time to break the cycle.

When you find yourself in a devolutionary downward rumination jam, come up with a phrase that helps you seize the moment, such as:

  • “I am not my feelings”
  • “Name it and tame it!”
  • “Pump up the jam!”
  • “That’s not me!” or any other personal phrase that helps you recognize that you are lost in rumination, and it’s time to let go (at least for the moment).

Take a 16-Second Time-in!

Then practice this technique that I’ve taught to world class athletes, members of the military, high pressured business people, and law enforcement. It was even featured in the season finale of “Blue Bloods” with Tom Selleck and Danny Wahlberg! I call it The 16-second Time-in (feel free to use that as your phrase).

The moment you realize you’re ruminating, say your phrase, close your eyes and watch your breath as you take a long, slow, deep breath in. Watch it go down into your belly. And when it gets there, hold the breath in to the count of four and continue to watch it as it sits inside. Then, release it and observe the exhale as it moves up your chest, into your throat and back out through your nostrils. And then hold the breath out and witness it as it dissipates into the air. That’s in to the count of 4; hold to the count of 4; release it to the count of 4; and hold it out to the count of 4. All the while watching it, witnessing it, observing it. Then open your eyes, breathe normally and move on.

In those 16 seconds you were not in the past; you were not in the future. You were in the present moment. And in the present moment there is no fear, no regret, no grievance, no anger, no woulda – coulda – shoulda. At the end of your breath, acknowledge to yourself, “Here I am in this sacred, precious present moment.” Then ask yourself, “What am I going to do with it?”

Introducing a 16-second Time-in is the break your mind needed to loosen its grip on the past. Practice this every few hours or every time you notice you are having a rumination moment and within days, you will break your compulsion to live in the past.

It’s also an easy way to start a daily meditation practice. Go through the process four times and it’s a minute; 20 times and it’s five minutes. In just a few days, you will feel comfortable introducing pattern interrupts into difficult conversations, arguments, problem-solving situations when you are stuck, work-out sessions, waiting on a line – even getting stuck in traffic (make sure you keep your eyes open while you’re driving!).

We can break the cycle of rumination as well as other destructive emotional patterns by simply giving ourselves a 16-second Time-in. And reminding ourselves that the best is yet to come!

Feeling like you need to slow the swirl? Let’s spend 7 minutes together doing just that. Think about your day-to-day: How long does it take when you arrive home to talk, text, pick up a remote control, put on music, or the TV, or log on? When you get into your car alone, how long does it take until you put on music, call someone, text someone? We are creatures of habit and we habitually fill our stillness and silence with movement, sound, and activity.

Yet at our core, we ARE stillness and silence – pure unbounded, unconditioned consciousness.

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Source! Let’s dive deep into recovering from a setback.

Right after we experience a setback, the first thought that pops into our head is “NO!” And the second thought that usually follows is, “If I could just turn back the clock… if I could go back in time to the moment before this happened.”

Time travel has not yet been perfected but the concept of recovering through rejuvenation is real!

Rejuvenation comes from a combination of Latin words: re– to do it again; juvenis –young; and the suffix -ate – which means the equivalent of… essentially to make young again.

In today’s world, when we speak of rejuvenation, we are usually referring to the repair of the damage of a lifetime of physical and emotional aging and the replacement of damaged tissues. But when we experience a setback, it is our emotional state, our stability, our resilience, our strength and our ability to rise again after being knocked down, that requires repair.

A setback challenges every aspect of our being – the physical, the emotional, the psychological, the spiritual, the entire journey of our life that’s taken us through all the different highs, lows, mountains, valleys, abysses, peaks, and winding roads of our life. And in that moment, we may believe that there is no way back to how things were before the experience turned our life upside down.

But there is a way back! A way back to clarity, to peace, to emotional freedom, and to that moment of truly believing that the best is yet to come. Here’s what recovering requires:

  • Surrender,
  • Patience,
  • Self-forgiveness,
  • Trust, and
  • Courage.

This week, we’ll address the first step in recovering: Surrender. We need to move beyond our denial and our resistance – and accept that this is what has happened and this is where we are. We must pick up the foot that is planted firmly in the past and let go of our clinging to the way we believed things would be. This is the most difficult when we’ve just experienced a loss – especially the loss of a dear soul in our life. The process of making peace with the loss may take months or even years as each of the physical threads that connected us to that BEing slowly unravel.

Time is the only healer, and what you do each day to honor that BEing determines the speed of your healing. Celebrating the life that is no longer, celebrating the love that once was, and celebrating the eternal aspects of the connection that can never be eroded over time.

Losing anything else suddenly seems petty compared to the loss of life; yet losing anything we once cherished – a moment… a friendship… financial security… our hair… or a piece of our material world… still carries with it the initial grief and the pain of the consequences of the moment. The pain of our loss is equal to the depth of our love for the thing that is no longer.

And, it is in that moment where our physical body experiences its vulnerability – a state of hyper-sensitivity – in which our throat, our heart, our belly, cry out in agony. And, whether we utter a sound or not, we truly feel the wrenching depth of our emotion like a knife digging into us.

The tenderness of our heart receives the experience and our mind responds in-kind. It’s racing with every past and potential possibility. Waves of fear and sadness ripple through every fiber of our being. The rawness of the moment rushes over us in saddening waves of hopelessness, guilt, disappointment, emptiness and blame. Our valiant attempts at instant reframing sputter in futility and then vanish as they meet with resistance imposed by the new reality. And, our grief slowly builds over time as if each day, we placed one boulder after another onto our chest.

Everything in existence goes through a cycle. We are most familiar with the cycle of birth, living and death. But, your grief has a cycle also. And, the depth of your pain is not fathomless – it will have a bottom. It will have a beginning and an end. Right now, it may appear a thousand miles long but it’s really only a few inches. Ultimately, you will get to the other side.

So, while you are in the abyss of pain, your best tools are self-kindness (be gentle with yourself!), self-love (recognizing you are divine), self-forgiveness (acknowledging you deserve another chance), and self-compassion (rooting for your suffering to end).

The path back to wholeness requires that you treat yourself lovingly. That you are patient – allowing the world to unfold before you as you gently unfold back into it. We have a tendency to either curl up in withdrawal or to immediately leap back in not honoring our tender feelings deep within. But, in order to soar again, we have to take some time to rejuvenate, dust our self off, and then take the next step back to our wholeness.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Here are six ways for you to begin the rejuvenation process:

  1. Meditate. Connect to your stillpoint; find comfort in your Stillness
  2. Spend time in nature. Soak in the world around you and you will awaken the Universe resting within in.
  3. Pamper yourself.  Be kind to yourself, take a bath, have a massage, get a special mani-pedi, eat some comfort food, forgive yourself for one thing you’ve been regretting, choose yourself and make a note of it when you do.
  4. Spend time in the present moment. Watch clouds, listen to music, garden, cook, run, work out.
  5. Express yourself with passion. Write in a journal, blog, make a video, cook a fabulous meal, sing, draw, exercise, create, paint or dance.
  6. Make a gratitude list. Every day write down all the things for which you are grateful.

Follow these six easy rejuvenation steps for the next week, and write your comments below to share your journey back to wholeness. Every day will get a little easier.

This week on my Hay House Radio show we will explore the ancient question: Can we really change? Can we take that bold (and sometimes scary) next step toward becoming the best versions of ourselves?

Instead, I prefer to ask:

  • Why do we question our power?
  • What are we afraid of?
  • What are the reasons we make excuses and pull ourselves back into the same conditioned and constricted behaviors?

The answer is our limiting beliefs. Even the most successful people are carrying beliefs that are self-limiting – they are just different ones from yours. It all comes down to fear of being judged, of not measuring up, of having your heart broken, or not being included. We fears that our needs of attention, affection, appreciation and acceptance will not be met. We need to know those needs WILL be met… we want them… we crave them… but we don’t want anyone else to know we fear that they wont be met.

These fears limit us! We believe their lies! We’ve embedded them into our being. And in a weak moment, we live our life from them.

Here are the most popular limiting beliefs:

1. I can’t be fully authentic.
I’m not good enough – I’m afraid of being found out. I’m afraid I will disappoint those around me. I can’t show the world who I really am because they’ll judge me in a harsh or unkind way.

2. I’m not lovable.
My dream partner will see how unattractive I really am. I’ve been burned before. I won’t risk opening my heart to love again because most likely no one will show up. (& if they do, they’ll quickly learn the truth.)

3. I’m not worthy.
I wont put myself out there because no one will notice me & if they do, I’m afraid of being turned down or rejected & ultimately judged as being a poser.

4. I’m not strong enough to be self-sufficient.
I won’t make requests of others or ask for favors because if I get rejected, I’ll appear needy or even worse – needy.

5. I’m not abundant.
The wealth of the universe is for others – it doesn’t include me. Those who look for greater riches are greedy, don’t understand karma, or aren’t spiritual. I can’t even count that high. How could I ever achieve that? I’m not that kind of person — I’m fine exactly where I am in life – I don’t need more success, so I’m not going to reach beyond where I am.

6. I’m not smart enough.
I didn’t go to Harvard or Oxford… Only those who have a fine academic pedigree can achieve. I can’t dream big because I wont attain my dreams – and that would announce to the world, that I don’t measure up.

7. I’m not valued.
I’m just a peon. People won’t cherish my trust so I can’t trust them (and if I do, they will betray me).

These are just a few; but, there are hundreds of limiting beliefs that ripple through us throughout the day… and they keep us constricted, playing small, not being our best expression. AND YET, there are also so many times throughout the day when we step into our power. Trust in the universe. Embrace our highest expression. And own our impact.

How do we make a profound change in ourselves?

The answer is – we become destressified!! A brilliant example of a destressified mind-set is exemplified by the words of the late, great ESPN anchor Stuart Scott. Reflecting on his seven-year-long battle with cancer, he said, “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” Indeed, how, why, and the manner in which we live determine the fullness, grace, and beauty of every moment in our lives.

We are conditioned beings. Since we were babies, we have carved deep grooves into our brains to develop patterned responses. By simply reorienting ourselves to a few of our most fundamental behaviors, we can permanently rewire how and what we think, and transform how we respond to stress.

There are five core components to proactively destressifying, that I cover extensively in my book destressifying: The Real-World Guide to Personal Empowerment, Lasting Fulfillment, and Peace of Mind. They’re all concepts you know on the surface; but by diving deeper into their makeup and truly understanding them, owning them, and living them, you will subtly start rewiring the circuits in your brain. Very quickly, you will forge new pathways in how you think, how you perceive the world around you, and most important, how you respond to it.

The concept of mastery may seem intimidating, but ideally that’s how you show up for everything you do. You grasp the goal, and then you take action to get as close to it as possible. When you have attained a new level of competence, that once-dreamed-of achievement becomes the new base for your next step. Then you take that proficiency and move forward.

It’s pure personal evolution that you DO have the power to make happen! Let’s spend this week reflecting on the 5 masteries of destressifying and finally begin to let go of our constrictions and limiting beliefs to make change happen and become the best version of ourselves!
