“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” – Eleanore Roosevelt

Hello Spiritual Warriors! And welcome to the last week of 2014 and the first week of 2015 all rolled into one!

Endings & beginnings – what we do with them becomes the unique mosaic of our life. So kooky – but real. And here we have a week where we get to get clear and fuse them together.

Right now in the last few breaths of 2014, you may be dealing with some pretty big issues regarding your intentions, your heart, your career, your money, your health, your family, and your path. Maybe you are even too busy to read this blog. You may be trying to let go or bring closure to something in your life that hurt you, haunts you, troubles you, or simply distracts you.

This You Have a Choice meditation video is about making decisions – big or little… they create the fractal for what comes next. And that… can be a huge opportunity. Right here… right now… we can jump up and make a decision that will free us, move us, shift us away from the same-old same-old.

If you’re ready for that – then let’s take that step together! Let’s make a choice right now that will set us on a new path for the next twelve months. If we have the courage right now… to take that step, we can build on that in choosing a life filled with clarity, purpose, and deeper fulfillment.

This doesn’t mean everything will unfold the way we envision. But we do have total control of how we want to show up and respond to each circumstance, situation, roadblock, speed bump, and gift that the universe serves up. We have the power to break free from our conditioned way of thinking and doing or we can keep thinking the same way, reacting in the same way, and driving in the same direction. We get to choose our journey – and we get to choose how we transform.

Join me each week on Hay House Radio & if you can make the commitment, join me at one of my intimate workshops, Teacher Trainings, or retreats.

“Every day brings a choice: to practice stress or to practice peace.” –Joan Borysenko

Inner Healer skyscraperHello Spiritual Warriors!! And welcome to another issue of The Source and this week’s Calm Amidst the Chaos meditation video! It’s holiday time and you can feel it in the air… in our homes… in the workplace… in the stores… on the roads… and in our minds. This is the time of year where there’s a lot of self-reflection, judgment, and catching up. As we coast into a few weeks where we will spend time with family, friends, and co-workers – to share, reminisce, eat, drink, and make merry – our stress levels can rise, contributing to us not necessarily being our best versions.

We may find ourselves pretty vulnerable to people we haven’t seen or spoken to in a while. We will suddenly converge with groups that have been apart for a whole year. Each day may be filled with fears, tears, expectations, posturing, withdrawal, or uncertainty but this is our moment to bring our best version to the table.

Lead with LOVE this holiday season. BE present. Give the gift of your presence and your celebration of love!

Sometimes it can seem as if you can barely think during the holidays because of the non-stop, relentless flow of thoughts pouring into your our head. You start thinking about something really important and within five minutes, you’ve also thought about your dinner plans, other appointments you’ve made, your pet or your kids, a conversation you had with a relative, paying your bills, whether or not you set your TV to record a show, a trip you’ll soon be taking, and on it goes from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep. The feelings of overwhelm impact our decision-making, our stress levels, our creativity, our emotional intelligence, our sleep patterns, and ultimately our health.

The answer rests inside. We have the ability in any moment to stop the swirl, re-connect to the calm deep within, and then step into the next moment with greater clarity, creativity, intuition, and ease. And all we have to do is breathe! Yes it’s that easy. A technique I’ve shared with you before and with hundreds of thousands of stressed individuals is called 16 seconds to bliss and you have everything you need to do it right now. So let’s try it together:

• Breath deeply in through your nostrils to the count of four and witness;
• Hold that breath in your belly to the count of four;
• Witness the breath effortlessly moving back up your chest, into your throat, and back out of your nostrils to the count of four;
• And now hold that breath out to the count of four;
• And now breathe normally.

That was 16 seconds – and in that quarter of a minute, as you observed your breath, you were fully present. Thoughts were pouring in but you were not engaging them. Your mind was not in the past…not in the future…you were right here, right now as if your personal ringer was on silent. We call this gentle process meditation – a gentle interruption in your non-stop flow of thoughts, fears, memories, grievances, projections, assumptions, and anxieties.

Practice 16seconds as you shop… as you wait on lines… as you check-out… as you prepare dinner… or cook a meal… as you drive or travel to your holiday celebration… as you ring the door bell… as you sit down to dinner… and if or when anyone says something that pushes your buttons.

Make sure to start your group meal with everyone holding hands… gazing into each others eyes… and practicing just BEing. Feel gratitude in the little moments and feel the love as you make eye contact. You can even teach your family and friends 16 seconds.

If you are spending the holidays alone, practice 16 seconds to bliss every few hours and you’ll notice a shift in how you feel, what you say, how you act… and what you think. As the musical group En Vogue once sang: “Free your mind and the rest will follow” …and it all starts with the first breath. Remember: we transform the world by transforming ourselves. I’ll see you in the gap!

Happy Holidays!!! Peace. –davidji

Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

“One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” – William Shakespeare

dharma_leaderHello spiritual warriors! And welcome to another week of Life Tools. This week we explore the magnificence of nature. The dictionary defines nature as the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth. And it’s easy -as we race through the wild month of December- to be more focused on things, sales, stuff, products… but rarely the products of the earth.

A few weeks ago –at my annual Five Realms Retreat in Maya Tulum on the Mexican Riviera- I had the privilege of witnessing one of the most profound feats of nature. It was a bit before midnight and under the darkness of a new moon, a volcano of freshly hatched baby turtles burst from the sand. Hundreds of them bubbled up, poured out onto the beach to begin their trek to the sea where they would head out into the ocean to begin their new life. But because of the blackness of the night sky, they wandered aimlessly heading away from the waves lapping the shore only 20 feet away.

Unlike baby alligators, which are liberated from their nest by their mother, sea turtle hatchlings must do it all themselves. Digging out of the nest is a group effort that can take several days. And once they decide to burst out, they erupt from the nest cavity as a group. The little turtles orient themselves to the brightest horizon, and then dash toward the sea.

But there was no horizon… it was pitch black. So I turned on the light of my iPhone and began filming. They reoriented themselves to the light and began following it. I slowly backed up into the ocean and they chased the light until they reached the edge of wall of seaweed. Two meditation teachers at the retreat played the role of midwives, ferrying the stragglers over the seaweed wall and into the ocean.

Once in the water, baby turtles typically swim several miles off shore, where they are caught in currents and seaweed that may carry them for years before returning to nearshore waters. There are many obstacles for hatchlings in the open ocean. Sharks, big fish, circling birds and of course the man-made challenges of tar balls, nets, garbage, pollutants, and plastic threaten them in every moment. The obstacles are so numerous for baby turtles that only about one in 1,000 survives to adulthood. It is my hope that in that one isolated evening, we made a difference and somehow increased those odds.

But that’s just one night out of 365 and in a very unique situation. There are hundreds of opportunities throughout the year that each of us gets to make a difference and we shouldn’t squander those chances. Humans have a very sensitive relationship with nature. We have the power to make certain species extinct through poaching, carelessness, greed, and laziness. And we also have the power to elevate the human-animal dynamic by taking small actions each day. We can start by simply recognizing that we are all connected… that we ARE nature not separate from it. That all life is precious and we have the power to celebrate it, conserve it, and nourish it.

We can use less plastic, buy reusable containers, recycle, avoiding beauty products made with plastic scrubbing beads. We can also make efforts to clean beaches, adopt our pets, support animal rights organizations, and eat less meat & dairy. And we can start in this moment by simply being kinder to ourselves, to each other, being more present with those we spend time with, being more forgiving, and showing more compassion to those in our lives.

Let’s treasure our humanity and in the meantime…I’ll see you in the gap!
Peace. -davidji

“Stress is caused by being ‘here’, but wanting to be ‘there’.” – Eckhart Tolle

Dear Spiritual Warriors – Welcome to another week of life tools. This week the question is: Are you de-stressified?

The definition of stress is how you respond when your needs are not met.

Destressifiers (those who use the tools of destressifying such as identifying and consciously expressing their needs; practicing 16 seconds of breathing throughout the day; and starting each morning with meditation) better understand their core needs, have greater clarity regarding their prioritization, more consistently meet them, and – in those instances when their needs are not met – their bodies & minds respond in a unique way known as the destressified response where they transcend overwhelm, remind themselves of their innate strengths, clearly see the resources available, and leverage the silver lining in the moment – moving beyond any dark clouds they detect on the horizon.

CLICK FOR DETAILS

Essentially, the counterpart to the fight-or-flight response, the destressified response occurs when the body senses it is no longer in perceived danger (physical or emotional), and all the functions of the mindbody return to normal. As we destressify, the body moves from a state of physiological arousal, to one of physiological relaxation and our:

• Breathing slows and becomes quieter
• Pulse decelerates easing our blood pressure
• Digestive functions normalize as blood returns to our intestines
• Stress hormones (adrenalin, glucagon, and cortisol) slow their surges
• Immune system strengthens
• Platelets becomes less sticky and blood flows more easily

Accompanying this destressified physiological state of relaxation, are powerful mindbody benefits that impact our thoughts, how we interpret information, and how we respond to the world. Morning Meditation is the key… as are daily breathing techniques such as taking 16 seconds to BE present in turbulent moments and at 10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, and right before bed. As you begin to destressify, you will notice more & more that you are:

• less emotionally turbulent
• more patient
• a better listener
• less over-whelmed
• more focused and clear
• less fidgety
• more relaxed, and
• truly, the calm amidst the chaos.

Let’s do it right now – simply watching your breathing for 16 seconds…in for four seconds…hold for 4 seconds…exhale for 4 seconds…and holding the breath out for 4 seconds as you ease back into normal breathing.

As you continue to cultivate your meditation practice, you will start to become more comfortable with your authentic self – the true self that rests beneath all of your veneer… Rather than buy-in to your most constricted and conditioned behaviors, you will suddenly find that you are more fluid and more intuitive and more creative…a better problem solver.

This potent shift into this expanded gear will change your basic nature… you will respond to life rather than react to it – and because of this internal shift, you will make better decisions. By cultivating a daily destressifying practice, you will create this state of restful awareness as your primary biological response to stress! Let’s keep meditating together every day and let’s stay connected.

Join me Thursday LIVE! on Hay House Radio and join me for my dharma workshop where you will learn several key aspects to live a destressified life. In the meantime, I’ll see you in the gap! Peace. -davidji
